Harry H. Hazlewood.  The New Roses of 1934.
Czecho Slovakia again, comes into the picture with Josef Strnad. This is a variety with coppery salmon buds fading to silvery pink. Growth is poor and the variety unattractive. The surname is spelt quite correctly, and the Consul-General for the country of its origin suggests the pronunciation should be ’Sternard’.

New Roses 1934.  Josef Strnad (HT.  Jan. Bohm 1932). A seedling of 'Aspirant Marcel Rouyer' and 'Toison d'Or'. One of the best novelties of recent years. Bud long, on stiff stem, opening into a very large, full flower in all conditions of weather. Colour dark red with traces of yellow orange and rosy colours. Growth erect and disease resisting foliage. Very free and continuous in bloom. Excellent for all purposes. 4/-each.
Poor growth. Colour fades badly to pink and the variety is unattractive generally.
