Gerard Williams. Final Analysis 1998-99
'Jim Dandy' (BENjim); Bernardella 1988; 'Rise 'n' Shine' x 'Marina', red and yellow bicolour; 78 reports on 130 bushes; 1-6 years; 60cms; 7.5 rating. A rose that seems to have grown in popularity over the years under review and with four reporters including it among their list of favourites. The large number of reporters extol its virtues as a good decorative rose with its striking bicolour. In fact one Northland reporter says it is a strike above a good decorative--praise indeed coming from one of the Raiders. The bushes appear to be healthy and the repeat good, but most reporters do not like the blooms after the decorative stage, saying they open quickly, lose their form and some even claim the fully open blooms are ugly. So that seems to be the clue, if you want a garden rose you may be disappointed. But if you want a good decorative bloom to put in the Show or cut flowers for the home you should be pleased with this one.

Nola Simpson. Review of Newer Roses for 1997-98 Season.
'Jim Dandy' (BENjim). Bernardella, 1988. 'Rise n Shine' x 'Marina'. red and yellow bicolour.
16 reports on 27 plants; 1-6 years; 65cms; 7.5 rating. Most, reporters extol its virtues as a decorative bloom for showing, but as it opens it goes blah and looks untidy and shaggy. The buds are red/gold fading as it opens to pink tonings. Bay of Plenty says it is well worth growing for the striking colour combination, blooms open fast. Waikato finds it prone to rust, repeats well, blooms last well in a vase. North Harbour says stems can be coarse when grown in the garden, healthy apart from mites. Gisborne reports a very poor bush and is not pleased with it. Napier, Canterbury, Northland, Wellington, Paeroa and Golden Bay all comment on the striking bicolour decorative blooms which go over rapidly, health is generally good.

'Jim Dandy' (BENjim); Benardella 1988; 'Rise 'n Shine' x 'Marina'; red / yellow bicolour; 16 reports on 21 plants; 1-3 years; 60cms; 7.1 rating. By all accounts this is going to be a very good decorative rose for the show buffs, all the reports signify this. Wellington says it is a favourite, lovely decorative shape, healthy and picks well. Nelson lovely decorative form, strong healthy growth, opens and fades fast, repeat good. North Harbour says it is extremely healthy, great decorative, must disbud, plenty of flowers. Te Awamutu brilliant rich colour, long decorative buds, opens fast, good repeat, bush well clothed, can be attacked by both powdery and downy mildew. That is a few comments to whet your appetite.
