Bred by Jacques-Julien Margottin père (1817-1892) (France, 1853).
Introduced in Australia by Northampton Nurseries in 1861 as 'Sir John Franklin'.

Bloom:

Red. Large, full (26-40 petals) bloom form. Blooms in flushes throughout the season.

Growing:

USDA zone 6b through 9b (default).

At this stage there is no real proof that 'Sir John Franklin' was bred by T. Johnson, but it may just be possible. Thomas Johnson came to Melbourne with his family from his native Cambridgeshire some time around 1850, and by the early 1860s he was running a rose nursery,.
