La Reine rose photo
Rose photo courtesy of Jeri Jennings
This rose was collected in Santa Barbara, CA, and has been grown under the study name "De la Vina Mystery" ... when collected, it was growing out through the top of an 8-ft. eugenia hedge -- which shows what a rose can do when it is determined to reach the sun. The rose was probably planted before the 1920 earthquake, and the hedge planted later. Probably, the rose had been "removed" but enough remained for it to make a comeback.

Portrait of 'La Reine' from Journal des Roses March 1880. In the accompanying text, it is described "This rosebush is vigorous, and its very large, very full and very well-shaped flowers are beautiful lilac-pink, as our drawing shows.", so the yellowing of the paper over time appears to have altered the original colours.
