Does this rose lend itself to growing as a huge shrub? Or is it best trained as a climber/pillar rose? I'm picking one up in May and would be delighted to hear from somebody who may have grown it for a while.

I would say it will put up with whatever you want to do in the way of pruning ... This year I pruned it back harder than usual. No problem.

Grows very tall - up to about 2 metres ...
