"Planning for Year-round Interest in a Baltimore Rowhouse Garden" by Christopher Weeks
The rose year begins with the robust climber Rosa foetida 'Lawrence Johnston', which must be the most gorgeous and generous yellow rose ever. (Vita Sackvile-West likened the color to "the best Jersey butter".) 'Lawrence Johnston' (a non-repeat bloomer) has now clambered half-way up the carriage house wall and to provide a later yellow interest, I planted a Lonicera periclymenum 'Graham Thomas' about three feet away. The two are now hopelessly and happily entwined up the brick wall; the rose blooms in May and June, the honeysuckle from July to October.

Lawrence Johnston 1923 Pernet-Ducher... out of the same cross as 'Le Rêve'... For some reason it did not appeal to the raiser, while 'Le Rêve' was put on the market. It languished unappreciated until Major Lawrence Johnston saw it, bought the original and only plant, and transferred it to his garden at Hidcote Manor... [Thomas describes how the rose eventually made it into his hands and decribes the plant itself.] The original plant still grows at Hidcote Manor.

Lawrence Johnston ('Hidcote Yellow') Large-flowered Climber. Parentage: 'Madame Eugène Verdier' x 'Persian Yellow'. Description... large, deliciously fragrant golden yellow flowers in profusion in the season and intermittently afterwards... Originally raised about 1920 by Joseph Pernet-Ducher, it was brought up by Major Lawrence Johnston for his famous garden at Hidcote Manor, from which it was finally introduced in 1948...
