Rose Nomenclature
By the Editor
As no doubt some of our members are aware, a very unsatisfactory situation with respect to Rose names has arisen within the past few years due to the practice of certain large commercial firms in re-naming Roses of European origin, contrary to and in defiance of "International Rules of Botanical Nomenclature" and its supplementary schedule known as Appendix VII (Nomenclature of Garden Plants).
Valid Name: Botaniste Abrial
Re-christened: Lowell Thomas

Botaniste Abriel (Mallerin, 1943). Long golden yellow buds opening to mildly fragrant soft yellow blooms. In U.S.A., this name has been changed contrary to International Rules to 'Lowell Thomas'. It is intended to retain original titles here out of respect to the first nominee quite apart from any alterations. This variety under its assumed name was granted the A.A.R.S. in 1944. It is so far a moderate grower with blooms of 30 petals which like all others in this section fade in hot sun.

Botaniste Abrial  (1 plant, 2 years; 4 plants, 1 year). Strong grower with large glossy pale green foliage. The medium sized flower is perfectly formed with a high pointed centre. Rigid stems. The colour is new in roses— an attractive light lemon shade with a faint tinge of green. This promises to be a future member of my double purpose group. Called Lowell Thomas in America.

Lowell Thomas (Correct name, Botaniste Abrial).- A fine upright yellow rose of good form. Well worth growing.
