The earliest appears to be 'Sir Robert Stout' in 1883. This was described as "dazzling velvet red, very fine when pruned to the very young wood; the old gives purple blossoms and should be cut away." Gained the honour of being Champion Rose at the Auckland Horticultural Show in 1897 and on four previous occasions.
