I can say that this is not 'Golden State', which leans towards apricot, and has oddly rigid petals and plant.

And not Goldstar, which is quite yellow, but quite wispy and thin-wooded.

The main page says "does not fade in full sun."
However Mark in Texas' comment 2 Sep, 2008 said "the yellow does fade to greenish white".
Comments from growers would be valuable.

Mine has been in full sun in 90 degree weather with absolutely no fading.

Dianne! What a lovely picture you captured of this one! I had never heard of this one but just got the Antique Rose Emp catalog and was looking at it longingly (as we were just -11 again last night and more snow on the way to start March). Dianne, you have grown so many! Do YOU have any guesses as to who/what Nacogdoches may truly be??? In the threads someone suggested Sunblest and looking at the pics here, that is a great guess. Especially with the paler, glossier leaf which Sunblest absolutely does have. For SURE it is NOT Celebrity which I have grown and which has some pink or even thin red to the petal edge. OREGOLD is very easy to identify: huge, ugly thorns and very glossy, very disease prone very dark foliage. Pretty sure it is not Oregold. With the WHITE on the outer petals I am going to throw NEW DAY/MABELLA, the J&P Rose of the Year 1977, into the kitty. There is a squareness to New Day's blossom that is suggested in some of the pics of Nacogdoches and that white to the outer petal is common with New Day. Furthermore, NEW DAY was a Kordes creation and others have noted what seems to be Kordes in the traits with Nacogdoches. Having been discovered in a hotel strip, in all probability it is NOT something too esoteric at least not upon release. Most likely something easily purchased at a garden center or big box discount chain. So many yellows out there! If it were Buccaneer it would be like 8 feet tall in Texas and the blooms would fade very badly. ALLSPICE, Dianne? I doubt it but a candidate? But gets too tall??? Same with Selfridges, just gets wayyyy too tall even in Ohio. Lowell Thomas, Mme. Marie Curie? Summer Sunshine has greyer foliage than I see here. The plant I the pics looks more on the modern side, I would say post 1965? Would love to hear YOUR views and everyone else's as well as this one has not been commented on in almost 4 years.

VERY interesting question, and you can be certain I'm going to be comparing plants this coming season. I agree with you on what it is NOT. I'd have said that it isn't New Day either, since I've grown New Day for so many years, but looking at some of the photos on HMF I can say I'm going to have to look at that again. This rose is definitely too short to be Allspice. I'll let you know if I get any insight from comparisons this year.

Dianne! Any more info on this one? New Day? Sunblest? Any more guesses? Graceland?

I think Sunbright is your best guess yet. I'm going to be looking closely at those two together. :-)

Hi Dianne, any thoughts about the identity of this rose yet? Thanks!

I would suggest some photos of bud and pedicel, showing smoothness, glands or prickles; and an average leaf on a hand for size comparison. Many roses over a 70 year period have been mentioned in the comments. I have added this chronological list to the main page.

Kim, I was waiting for blooms on both this year. Tomorrow should be the day. However, I took leaf sets from the top of both with similar sized buds. They are so identical, it is uncanny. I will post a photo.

They are identical, down to tiny prickles on the stems too fine to see. And both plants have similar larger prickles on the canes. When I see the open blooms tomorrow, that will be really telling. Sunblest is a budded plant and Nacogdoches is own-root, but they are within days of opening at the same time.

Cool! Thank you! I'm excited to finally have an expert opinion based upon side-by-side comparisons!

DIANNE---yes, you ARE the expert and it looks as if you cracked the code! SUNBLEST! And it all makes sense and I hope HMF updates Nacogdoches' page with this info. I would like a TINCH of credit for first saying, based on the open bloom, it was Sunblest/Landora. !!!!!!!!!!

Comparison photos of the two, side-by-side, of all the plant parts will go a long way to proving the identification. I will happily make the comment on the main page to see this discussion, but there needs to be some proof to demonstate the claim.

I LOVE the idea of a "found" rose. Yet 'Katy Road Pink' is 'Carefree Beauty' and 'Grey Lady Pink' is 'Lucky Lady'. A little too much romance has been put in the FOUND category. I remain agog at how KRP and CB were not connected from Day 1. I will give credit to GLP and LL as LL was off the market more or less within 5 years of her AARS....

Okay, everyone, I think we got ahead of ourselves on this one. We can scrap the entire idea that this is Sunblest. The sepals are all wrong, for starters, both in color and shape. The stamens are the wrong color, and there are subtle differences in petal color. The ovary area is larger on Nacogdoches. I'm looking now at Oregold. The sepals are a better match, and the deep yellow blooms are a possibility. I'm not sure about the leaves, however. This is really a mystery!!

Can someone tell me how to pronounce "Nacogdoches"? I can learn how to spell it, but have never heard anyone say the name of the rose or the town in Texas.

If you can find a copy of Lucinda Williams' CD "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road", there is a song called Lake Charles and a lyric that says 'he was born in N....'. That's where I finally learned how to say it. It's sort of 'Nag a do chess', but I don't know how to correctly write out the phonetics.

Thank you so much! I think you did a great job of writing it out phonetically, but it will also help to listen to the song to get the finer points.

Using actual English words to illustrate pronunciation:

Nag a doe cheese
Nag a doe chess is heard, too, but I think the former is more commonly heard.

Great, thanks for the additional help! That isn't a word that's familiar to my ears, but the rose survived the winter in good shape so I'll practice saying the name every time I look at it and it will eventually sound right to me.
