The Kardinal that Jackson and Perkins used was Kardinal 85, hence the stiff form on roses like Aromatherapy. So there are some newer roses that eroneouslyhave this older Kardinal (1960s version) in their lineage. Let me see if I can find some sort of reference now that their info is scattered to the winds of the economy.

Yeah, here is a clip from Aromatherapy's patent:
"...an unnamed, unpatented pink hybrid seedling, (`JAColite` (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 4,167).times.`KORlingo` (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 5,846)) with ..."

Its the same pink seedling they used in many of their other new hybrids, including the new red/white blend (Im seriously not keeping track of their name changes to say which one, but it was the one released this year).

Michael...

I just searched the database using the LINAGE criteria in the ADVANCED SEARCH for any rose with the seed parent Jacolite (Honor) crossed with the pollen parent of the old Kardinal (Kardinal '67) and only one rose came up with that cross ... 'Fairest One' now called ' J & P Merlot'. Otherwise if the cross was the same as the one in the 'Aromatherapy' patent, the cross would be Honor x Kardinal '85.

If the above is true, we only need to change one rose in the HMF database. Do you agree ?

btw ... thanks for the heads up. Your help is always appreciated.

Smiles,
Lyn

Correct.

From this specific Kardinal,

Astra (hybrid tea, De Ruiter, 1989) is from the Kardina 85 version, according to the year and patent info.

Bimboro ® is from this older Kardinal.

Patricia Dawn is likely from KArdinal 85, given its year, description, and genetic desire to sport coral tones, but there is no specific reference to which Kardinal is the correct version. It never ceases to get confusing, lol.

Thank you, Michael. It's after 1 am. I'll work on these tomorrow when I have a working brain.

PS... you can do an ADVANCED SEARCH using just the old Kardinal as a pollen parent and you will get a list of roses that have that rose in the linage. You may spot some others which should be replaced with Kardinal 85. I'd do it myself tonight, but my brain has already gone to bed.

Yeah, that sounds wise. This rose name has been a complete nuisance. I wish that the registrations didnt even allow duplicate names with dates or duplicate names because something "is extinct". I guess it gets trickier when it comes to international naming, whch means even less regulation over the flow of names.

Thanks again, Michael. This is exactly the kind of help HMF needs from the rose community.

Altho' it seems strange, but Kardinal '67 only has one decendant and that is 'Bimboro'. Of course, not much is known about this rose and it may have been used and found to be a poor breeder.

Lyn
