Hargita (hybrid rugosa) Dr. Kaufmann 1894; R. rugosa X P. de Lyon; light velvety deep carmine with yellow, medium to large, double, cluster-flowered, fragrance 5/10, repeats, growth 8/10, climbing, 80cm.

Mais ce ne fut qu'en 1893 que le Dr E KAUFMANN, un Hongrois, fit un apport de cinq variétés, dont on peut dire qu'elles sont vraiment des hybrides : Jelina, Tamogled, Vihorlat, fleurs plus ou moins rouge carminé, en corymbes, issues de R. rugosa X Etoile de Lyon ; Cibles, Hargita, R. rugosa rubra x Perle de Lyon, Cibles ; carmin brillant, sur fond jaune, Hargita, carmin de cochenille pourpré, passant au rose. Ces cinq variétés portent des noms de montagnes de Hongrie et apportèrent au genre Rugosa de nouveaux coloris.

Mr. Court Marshall v. St. Paul in Fischbach collects all rose varieties with rugosa blood. Following varieties are in his possession to date: Rosa rugosa, Thunberg, root form; Rosa rugosa alba, Rosa rugosa rosea, Kaiserin des Nordens (Regel from Japan '75), Rugosa germanica (Dr. Müller), Rugosa germanica lighter form, Compte d'Epremesnil (Nabonnand '82), Mme Georges Bruant (Bruant '88), Mme Charles Fredr. Worth (Schwartz '90), Thusnelda (Dr. Müller '89), sport of Thusnelda, Rugosa fimbriata (Morlet '92), El Mikado (from Japan?), Zuccariniana (Bruant), ugly; America (Paul and Son '94), Cöbler (Dr. E. Hargita. Large, well double, dark carmine, lighter outer petals, fine form, very long canes and quite floriferous.
...These last 5 youngest children of the race are thanks to the diligence of Dr. Kaufmann in Pecs-Szabolcs. They are crossings of Rugosa with Perle de Lyon and Etoile de Lyon. The foliage is very good in all and interesting because they have the reddish underside of some Tea roses....
