The 1959 reference gives the date of the discovery (1953) and, besides the name of the introducer, also that of the dicoverer (J. Speck).

Thanks Bruna,
We’ve been able to put the date back further, from 1956 to 1951.
The 1959 reference probably picked up that information from Modern Roses 5, 1958.
Mostly the references attribute Verbeek as the discoverer.
For me the big question is – what did ‘Modern Times’ sport from?
In the refs up until 1980, it was said to be ‘Red Better Times’ (1937).
In 1986, it was changed to ‘Better Times’ (1934).

While I am on this rose, I am looking at the synonym ‘Candy Stripes’ (South Africa) with disbelieving eyes.

Hello Patricia,
as for J. Speck you are right! The Catalogo Benedetto Sgaravatti is very precise and reliable and, when it reports two names, the first is that of the breeder/discoverer and the second that of the introducer. So .. my mistake for not having correctly "read" the information on this occasion.

Hey.  Does anyone out there know much about this rose?  I am considering it as it is unusually colored - but not much info. regarding issues such as general health etc.

Slow grower for me. Rather anemic disease-prone plant, actually.
