Final Analysis 1984-85
Austragold. McGredy 1980. 6.8 rating. Yellow. 30 reports in over the five years from Northland down to West Otago. First reports spoke only of an average rose yet with good colour. Perhaps North Otago sums most reports up when they say that "First year was disappointing, second year much better and third year better still". The West Coast like it, saying it is a better Floribunda than a Hybrid Tea. Auckland say it blooms well, but could grow better and not take blackspot. No one else mentions disease, in fact they say it is healthy and makes a good yellow garden rose.

Don Sheppard. Review of Newer Roses in 1983-84 Season.
Austragold. McGredy 1980 (Breeding not available). 7 reports on eight plants, 2 years average growing with height from 1 metre to 1.5 metres, gaining a rating of 7.2. All reports tell of the good non fading yellow colour of the blooms. West Coast mentions that the blooms tend to come in heads, the repeat is good and the bush is vigorous with good foliage. Oamaru say much the same. So this winner of a Certificate of Merit at our Trial Grounds is still a very worthwhile garden rose.

Don Sheppard. Review of Newer Roses 1982-83 Season.
Austragold McGredy 1980. (Not mentioned in Modern Roses 8). 9 reports, 2 years, 3' average. 7.0 rating. A yellow that won a Certificate of Merit at Palmerston North a year or so back. So how does it fare in our gardens? Eight reports satisfaction. Good colour, good blooms, holding well and not too large, with good healthy foliage. West Coast like it as it makes a showy garden rose. Only Gisborne is unhappy because of a sickly bush. Central Taranaki say it is almost a floribunda as the flowers come in clusters.

Don Sheppard. Review of Newer Roses 1981-1982 Season. Hybrid Teas.
Austra Gold. Yellow, 6 reports. 1 year, Average height 3'6", 7.1 rating. Reports in from Northland to North Otago, which speak of average to good growth, good health, and with blooms of good colour, coming in lovely flower heads. In the North it repeats well, while on the West Coast it doesn't repeat enough. Masterton finds the blooms hold well.
