One of the more colourful of [Pemberton's] pale roses, being described, perhaps generously, as bright crimson. It was first shown under his seedling number, whereupon the name was proposed by a lady who had lived in India a long time. The story was of Nurjahan the Beautiful, Crown Princess of Persia, who met her future husband in the rose garden. He was Jehangir, son of the Emperor of India, but when he succeeded to the throne he was not a successful ruler, and it was his wife who ruled the country as the power behind the throne. Far from objecting to her dominance, her devoted husband gave her the name Nur Mahál, which means The Light of the Palaces, and must confirm our admiration for a more than capable lady. Her life story, said Joseph, may be read in Mistress of Men, by Annie Steel...
