Does anyone have information on Cl. Pres. Herbert Hoover?? How tall does it climb? (I am in Zone 6, sunny, fairly humid location.) Any health problems? How prolific/long-blooming is it? The coloration is gorgeous...I'm just curious as to why it isn't better known. Thanks, Cynthia

Hi, Cynthia, I don't grow the rose. I've seen the bush, and the bloom is beautiful.
I can offer some guesses why it isn't in every garden. First, climbing hybrid teas don't rebloom very well. They tend to bloom only once, in the spring.
Second, it's a climbing sport of a pernetiana. Pernetianas were early hybrid teas that love heat and sometimes die back when pruned hard. They can blackspot. In the right climate, they are glorious, but they don't like every garden. Notice that the gardens where this rose is grown are in warmer, drier parts of the country. If you have that climate and don't mind a once-bloomer, then maybe this is the rose for you.

Cynthia,

I don't grow it yet, but I'm planning on it. I'm not quite sure where you are from, but here in the west coast of California we have a publication called Pacific Horticulture. One the the articles in the April/May/June 2008 issue is titled "Santa Clara University's Wall of Climbing Roses." David Perez is the gardener along with a volunteer force from the San Jose Rose Heritage Society. His favorite rose is President Herbert Hoover. That is saying something since the wall is one half mile long with over 250 climbing roses on it. I like the rose because I think it is the rose that was planted in San Francisco in the yard where I grew up as a child. I actually think we grew the sport called the same with "cl." after its name. Although you cannot get the article online, you can see the website at pacifichorticulture.org where you will find out how to order the magazine. It does not, however, have a photo of this particular rose. Hope this helps. Steve
