For some unknown reason, this rose didn`t want to be in my garden. It just up and died this spring. Having uprooted it and changed the soil, I have planted the mini climber "Gloriana",bought from our local nursery, in its place; now waiting anxiously to see how this will fare.

Is this rose lax enough to be trained along a cast iron fence only 3 feet high, or is it too upright to be grown that way?

Thank you. I'm not surprised to learn that, but even so I wanted to read what others had to say about this. I've read before that many of the progeny of New Dawn have much stiffer canes than it does and so they are much more upright climbers (& this does not surprise me because New Dawn is often crossed with hybrid teas and floribundas), but I wasn't familiar with Bantry Bay.

This one is beautiful. A real eye catcher over an arbour.
Does well in Australia.

Dear gardening70,
Is Bantry Bay good for picking?
I am looking for a couple of new pale pink or pinkish mauve varieties to order bare-rooted for this coming winter.
I was thinking of Jacaranda, but I see from your photos it is a fairly strong pink.
I'm also thinking of New Ballerina which is a pale pink. Currently growing Flamingo and
Ophelia which are wonderful pale pink roses and v. good for picking.
Do you have any recommendations ? I think that David Austin's Claire rose would wash out too much in a warmer courtyard setting.

Thanks,

No idea for picking, it's on a friends arbour.

If you're looking for a climber have you considered New Dawn?

Jacaranda is a strong pink and is suseptible to blackspot, I de-leaf it continually.

Best pink for garden worthiness, form, fragrance and picking would be- The childrens rose (1995).
Read the comments on this one it's vigorous!!
