Piester, Conn., (12pl.), terms it poor in midsummer, but with durable flowers which lack depth; he considers the growth fair. Hampton, Tex., (2 pl., 2 yr), has not been able to make the plants live. At Breeze Hill we recorded a small double rose of light red opening flat; ordinary plants with healthy foliage. It did not appear important.

'Barcelona' (H.T.) (W. Kordes Sohne, 1932). F. 3. Carmine crimson with velvety black shadings. The blooms carry 40 to 50 large petals, and the colour keeps quite well under average conditions. The growth is good, with clean foliage. This variety is improving on its first year’s performance. E.

Foote (Mass.) [1st season] does not like to form an opinion on new varieties of one year's testing, so makes no definite statement. Free (N.Y.) [6 plants, 1st yr] reports poor growth, with flowers of a wonderful dark crimson color, but blooms very sparse in fall. Dunning (N.Y.) [1 plant, 1st yr.] calls it very promising and considers it a rival of 'Etoile de Hollande', with a more symmetrical, cupped flower. Treide (Md.) [1 plant, 1st yr] had good growth but only a few large, deep red, fragrant flowers, somewhat like 'Sensation'. Hampton (Tex.) has tried it twice but has had no luck. Raffel (Calif.) calls it one of the finest red roses during the spring and fall but his strong-growing plants had some mildew.

BARCELONA  HT. (W. Kordes Sons, 1932)
A dark crimson Rose with 75 or more petals arranged in a symmetrical, cupped form. Petals have that velvety, blackish appearance so much admired in dark red Roses. Fragrant. Color does not burn and the flowers last in good condition for several days. Plant vigorous and upright, blooming freely throughout the season. This novelty is really important because of the great quantity of flowers. It will always give you a splash of dark red in the garden, and you will find it just a little different from your other red Roses. $1.25 each
