p91. Rose of Tralee I named both for the song and for the festival that has been held annually at Tralee for some years now; I find it amazing that no rose-breeder before me had thought of using this name.

p111. Bob [Aylwin] used occasionally to come with me to rose functions and one of these was to the Festival of Kerry, which is held annually at Tralee. During the festival a girl is elected to be the Rose of Tralee for the year - the title, of course, comes from the familiar song, which was written by a man called William Mulchinock, who died in 1864. My involvement was to name a rose the 'Rose of Tralee' - there had never been a rose of Tralee in the flower sense before.....
