According to the 1st American Rose Annual, year 1916, it states that the parentage is R. rugosa x Ards Rover.

Enrique........

It is very possible this is the true parentage of 'Rugosa Magnifica', but the true parentage of the rose remains "unknown". It's not that I doubt your report at all. Modern Roses I was compiled by the ARS by sending out index cards to various nurseries asking them to report back what they knew about the roses they carried.

Can you imagine the scope of such a project? ! I just found out about how this first edition of Modern Roses was compiled from a rose friend a few weeks ago who actually has some of the index cards used to gather information for the publication. So far, I have not been able to confirm this parentage through any other source I have available to me at this time.

The parentage R. rugosa x Ards Rover is confirmed by a listing in

George C. Thomas, "Roses for All American Climates", New York 1924, p. 190

breeder is Van Fleet, introduction by Conard & Jones Co. in 1905.

Hello Lyn,

sorry for the... 2 year wait in responding to this post. Well-- I'm just posting on what I have found in the old ARS annual (which I don't own anymore.) But my gut tells me to go with this since it was Van Fleet who gave the parentage. That's not to undermine the vastness of Modern Roses-- but a few friends of mine say they have seen errors here and there. And it is possible that they've overlooked stuff too and wrote "seedling X seedling" just to fill in space.

But according to Jedmar, "Roses for All American Climates" seem to have this parentage too.

Enrique, I think there is sufficient information now to add the parentage as R. rugosa x Ard's Rover. Magnifica is apparently part of a whole series of cultivars bred by Walter van Fleet around 1900 and commercialized by Conard & Jones in 1905. Others are e.g.
New Century: R. rugosa alba x Clotilde Soupert
Sir Thomas Lipton: R. rugosa x Clotilde Soupert

Jedmar, thank you. I am so glad you have a greater rose library than I do and can provide information from more than one source.

I have a rugosa magnifica in zone 5. It is very hardy, although it has a tendancy to get mildew. The mildew never harms it, but looks rather bad. The flowers are lovely with a moderate scent, but they only last a couple of days before all the petals fall off.
