I got this rose almost a year ago from Roses Unlimited, and am very pleased with him so far. Even though I had a slight case of beetlemania about the time he bloomed for the first time this spring, the buds opened beautifully, and many had an unexpectedly rich gold coloring that I thought was quite fetching with the dark pink outer petals.
He had a little mildew when all the other roses had it, but it wasn't bad, and didn't last long. Right now the leaves are beautiful.
I've heard from a NC grower that he balled for her fairly often, but I haven't had a problem with that. It must be a hit or miss thing.
My plant is in a large pot and part sun/bright shade, zone 8b. No spray garden.

Do you still have this rose, Virginia? If so, how is it doing? I look at the photos here and compare them to my "Dr. Grill from Honeysuckle" and see many similarities. I guess I'm trying to verify whether my "Dr. Grill" is the real thing, since 'Souvenir de Victor Hugo' is a parent of 'Dr. Grill'.

My original reply has vanished into the ether, so I'll try again.
This was one of the first roses I purchased, and lasted longer than my ignorance warranted. As I hope the photos show, it was unusually variable- even for a Tea. Looking at your Dr. Grill photos, I'd say the shape was similar, but couldn't say more. Does your Dr. Grill have the golden shades depicted in early illustrations?

From the Rosen-Zeitung 1892, page 79: Under the heading Favourite Roses, by Ketten Bros, Luxembourg.
"Lieblingsrosen ...
Souvenir de Victor Hugo (Bonnaire 1886): Blume blendend leuchtend chinesischrosa, Herz kapuzinergelb, Rand der Blumenblätter silberig und glänzend karmin umsäugt.
... Gebr. Ketten. Rosengärtner zu Luxemburg."
My translation:
Favourite Roses ... Souvenir de Victor Hugo (Bonnaire 1886): Flower dazzling bright China pink, heart nasturtium-yellow, edge of the petals fringed with silvery and brilliant carmine. ... Ketten Bros. Rose Gardeners, Luxembourg.
