Richard Walsh. ….Moreover, you can’t always believe everything you even read in books with respect to names. On page 412 of Botanica’s Roses there is reference to a miniature rose ‘Mini Magic’. The list of roses, in particular Australian bred ones, was supplied by Phillip Sutherland with a particular ‘Mini Magic’ in mind. It was meant to be one of my seedlings, but unfortunately, no-one told the writer that. He got his description from Modern Roses , but it contained the description of an American rose, not available in Australia. The photo had been supplied by me and was of my rose, bred from ‘Avandel’ x [‘Masquerade’ x ‘Pink Parfait’]. I had tried to register mine several years earlier, but the ARS at that stage wanted 40USD per variety and I was not prepared to pay. The fee was eventually waived but in the meantime, an American rose had been registered with that name, but also in the meantime, mine had been placed on the local market under that name and there was never a need to change given the circumstances.

‘Mini Magic’. Modern, Miniature, yellow blend, Repeat-flowering. The flowers of this rose are mainly yellow when they first open, with pink tones mainly on the edge of the petals. As they age, the yellow fades and the pink intensifies to a light red almost through the approximately 25 petals. This deepening of color with age is inherited from ‘Masquerade’. The flowers are borne freely, both singly and in small clusters, on a compact, healthy plant about 8 in (20 cm) high. Foliage is medium green and glossy. It repeats quickly and is suitable as a border plant or pot specimen. It should not be confused with the American rose of the same name, another miniature, that was bred by Ernest Williams. Zones 5-10. Walsh, Australia 1994 ‘Avandel’ x (‘Masquerade’ x ‘Pink Parfait’).
