I find the following in History of the Rose, by Roy Shepherd (reprint, Earl M. Coleman, Publisher, 1978) p. 23.
"ELEGANS (Double White--The semidouble white blossoms are produced in huge clusters on an extremely vigorous plant. One of the oldest varieties"
That description is about the Ayreshire 'Elegans'. I wonder where Shepherd saw it? Lily Shohan said in the Forward to the reprint of History of the Rose that Mr. Shepherd grew some 3500 varieties. I suppose the garden itself no longer exists but might there be anywhere a list of what varieties he grew?
