p107. Lois Tabb. 'Mikayla Paige' ('Aotearoa New Zealand' x 'Sexy Rexy') Without a doubt this rose hybridised by Eric Flinn, from Kaitaia, is one of the best cultivars to have been introduced in New Zealand for many years. In view of the fact that it is still not widely available here, it will be a great pity if the rest of the world does not have the opportunity to see, smell and grow 'Mikayla Paige' which I consider to be outstanding. I have four bushes, two on laxa understock and two on multiflora and apart from the laxa bushes being slightly shorter than the multiflora in their first year, this rose seems quite disease resistant and healthy even when other varieties adjacent have powdery mildew, rust and downy mildew and all the other problems which seem to appear at this time of the year, despite spraying. My four bushes are planted in four different areas of the garden - the first in full sun all day, the second only gets sun from about I pm until evening and the other two are in sun from about 10.30 am. Nevertheless there doesn't seem to be any difference in the way they repeat, or the number of flowers they produce and all are very healthy. 'Mikayla Paige' is one of the fastest roses to repeat and whether it's just a small head with one, two or three florets or a magnificent large head of up to eight or nine florets with magnificent confirmation, the creamy white petals with yellow centred blooms are just delightful and if anyone ever says that only the old roses had perfume I defy anyone to say that any other variety of rose old or new could beat 'Mikayla Paige' for its strong fragrance. The medium foliage which is very well placed on straight stems just make the complete picture of 'Mikayla Paige' the Magnificent. Excellent as a garden rose and certainly a find as an Exhibition Stem.

'Mikayla Paige' (FLlmika) Flinn 2002. 16 Reports. 30 Plants. Garden 7.1. Exhibition 7.6. Medium/Tall. Health 7.5. Fragrance 6.9. Northland: good white flowers, repeats well, healthy rose, excellent stems for showing and strong perfume like 'Margaret Merrill' . Matamata: plant slow to get going but improving, could repeat better, has good large and small heads. BOP: few if any new basal shoots, grows very tall, first flowers excellent, but slow to repeat. Manawatu: a good floribunda, should be grown by more, very fragrant, quite healthy. Very tall stems often flop in the wind, does not make many basal shoots. Canterbury: an exceptional variety. North Otago: nice creamy white flowers, makes good show for exhibition.

p134 Final Analysis 2007. 'Mikayla Paige'. (FLlmika) Flynn 2002. FI. 51 reports, 87 plants, Garden: 7.7, Exhibition: 8.1, height medium, healthy, moderate fragrance. Creamy white blooms, medium sized, double in large clusters. Flowers early, repeats well, excellent large stem for exhibiting. Produces few basal shoots. PN Trial Grounds Silver Star Award 1999.

Hayden Foulds. Rose Breeding in New Zealand.
There are several other long time rosarians still active in breeding roses in New Zealand. In the far north is Eric Flinn of Kaitaia who has bred a fabulous white floribunda called 'Mikayla Paige' (FLImika) from two great floribundas - 'Margaret Merril' x 'Sexy Rexy'. A strong vigorous grower, its got the best of both parents - lovely heads of blooms, good fragrance and lovely creamy white blooms.

p20. Lois Tabb, Canterbury. My Five Healthiest Roses. 'Mikayla Paige' (FLImika). whilst still a fairly new bush it is a lovely creamy white with bright gold stamens, has lovely shaped flower heads both small and large, and repeats fairly quickly. Extremely healthy.

p27. Neville Guy. What? No Spray.... Some roses of course haven't made the transition from spray to no-spray, or just haven't handled the "no-spray" regime. 'Miklayla Page and... have all succumbed.

'Mikayla Paige' (FLlmika) Flinn 2002. Garden rating 7.7, Exhibition rating 8.2. 16 bushes, 10 reports.
Disease resistant. Moderate fragrance. Medium to Tall. BOP bush appears to be slow to get going, excellent stems for showing, very pleased with this rose. Te Awamutu plant hasn't done well, could be in for a shift to a better place in the garden. Canterbury plant is cutting grown and slow to get going but looks promising, dainty small cream flowers, very healthy foliage. Northland has good large and small stems on a healthy bush, creamy white flowers. Southland - nice neat flowers with good fragrance but not as strong as 'Margaret Merrill'. Waikato pretty and unusual, downy mildew early in the season. Three Manawatu growers all like the creamy white flowers, with lovely formed large stems, repeat could be better, small dark foliage, with a good fragrance.

The white 'Mikayla Page bred from 'Margaret Merrill' but with much larger heads and taller growth looked a great floribunda.

'Miklayla Paige'. (FLlmika) Flinn 2002. Garden rating 7.5, Exhibition 7.6. 15 bushes, 9 reports. Some health problems. Moderate fragrance. Medium height. White flowers. Waikato - very fond of this rose. Makes lovely large heads and vases for showing. Main fault repeat rather slow. Te Awamutu is a little disappointed. Plant has not done well. Could make a good small stem. Otago is also a little disappointed. First year looked very promising, but no new basals, with only straggly growth. Foliage and flowers on top. Another Waikato grower says very fragrant, tall upright growth habit, makes few basals. Lovely creamy white trusses. Northland - tall bushes produce neat large heads for showing.

'Mikayla Paige' (FLlmika) Flinn 2002: Garden rating 7.7, Exhibition 8.2: 18 bushes, 10 reports. Disease resistant; Moderate fragrance; Medium height; White flowers. Northland - excellent health, growth and flowers. Manawatu - great all round rose for garden and showing. Slow repeat only real problem. Marlborough - very good large stems; good garden and show rose. Waikato grower is very disappointed with this rose. Canterbury - two year old bushes a bit slow to start; lovely fragrance.
Makes nice large and small stems; very healthy. Manawatu - a great rose for the garden and the show bench. A must for the exhibitors. Larger clusters and smaller flowers than parent 'Margaret Merrill'.

p30. Peter Elliott. National Rose Society Trial Grounds. Two people in particular had made a big effort to attend the ceremony. Eric Flinn had come all the way from Kaitaia to get the award for the best rose on trial bred by an amateur and the Silver Star of the City of Palmerston North. What a beauty it was too. Named after his grand-daughter, Mikayla Paige. it is a cross between 'Sexy Rexy' and 'Margaret Merril'. It is a creamy-white floribunda showing strong features of both its parents. It should have very good show bench potential.

'Mikayla Paige' ('Margaret Merrill' x 'Sexy Rexy') has been around for quite some time, but Eric, a Life Member of the Kawitaia District rose Society, was in no hurry to prove it beyond his own garden and those of a few friends....It took him a decade to submit 'Miklayla Paige' to the trial grounds....

'Mikayla Paige'. (FLlmika) Flinn 2002: Garden rating 8.4: Exhibition rating 8.7: Disease resistant: Tall. Manawatu reports like 'Margaret Merrill' but smaller, less fragrance, neat and tall. Another Manawatu reporter - clean creamy white blooms, highly fragrant. Canterbury - nice perfume; makes very good stems. Otago very smitten with Mikayla; slow to get going. Beautiful healthy foliage. Another Canterbury reporter rates this very highly. All reporters say this is one of the best floribundas for garden and exhibiting.
