One of the tangents we went along at Ruston’s, in the nominal HRIA Tea-Noisette- China Collection, was to collect found Hybrid Perpetuals. We ran out of time to study them well, but many of them were pink or mauve-pink with a silvery reverse to the petals, sometimes with a button eye. Many of those fell into one of two groups. The first have globular, initially cupped flowers: at one stage I called them “Anna-La Reine”, since I couldn’t tell the difference between La Reine (1842) and its offspring Anna de Diesbach (1857). Now I just call them La Reine Family. David Ruston OAM said that “Old Anlaby” had the best repeat of that group in the HRIA collection.
