T. A. Stewart Memorial Award, 1981.
Mrs. Heather Rumsey of the Rose Society of New South Wales was awarded this high honour for 1981. Mrs. Rumsey has been an active member of the Rose Society of New South Wales for twenty-nine years and has been engaged in rose culture and propagation for an even longer period. During her membership of the Society she has served on the committee on three occasions and for the past four years has been one of the New South Wales delegates to the National Rose Society of Australia. In New South Wales, which has four Regional Societies, Mrs. Rumsey has travelled extensively into country areas of the State, attending Regional meetings and shows, giving talks and putting up displays. In recognition of her services to the Rose Society of New South Wales Mrs. Rumsey was made an Honorary Life Member in 1980. In association with her husband she has contributed the "New Roses" article in the Australian Rose Annual every year since 1961. She gave an address on floribunda roses to the first Australian Rose Convention in 1967. With her husband she pioneered miniature roses in New South Wales and has done much to bring these to their present popularity among rose enthusiasts and gardeners generally. She and her husband gave an address on miniature roses to the second Australian Rose Convention in April 1975. In conjunction with the Nurserymen's Association, Mrs. Rumsey did much to interest a local government body in the establishment of a public rose garden "Roxborough Park" which has become a show piece for rose lovers in the Sydney metropolitan area. As a member of the Heritage Roses in Australia group she has staged several displays of old roses at rose society shows which have attracted considerable public interest. As the secretary of the New South Wales Rose and fruit tree growers Association (R.A.F.T.) she loses no opportunity to present the Rose and the Rose Society to the public. Mrs. Rumsey was closely involved with the formation of the State Council of the Rose Society of New South Wales and as New South Wales delegate to the National Rose Society of Australia, attends all State Council meetings. Her wide experience of roses and the rose world demands that her opinion be sought and respected. The Rose Society of New South Wales is gratified that Mrs. Rumsey is the recipient of this, the highest honour that can be conferred upon a rosarian in Australasia.
