p22. "David Ruston's White Rambler" [close-up photo] Steve Beck writes: “The rose was first seen by Sue and I at Ruston Roses in 2004. David couldn’t tell us what it was, so we took cuttings and grew two plants which are now rambling monsters in our garden. After checking his rose list we thought it could be ‘White Dorothy’ (Cant 1908), a white sport of ‘Dorothy Perkins’. I have discovered some photos of ‘White Dorothy’ on HMF and in Charles Quest-Ritson’s Climbing Roses of the World, all of which show traces of pink. Ours rose shows no traces of pink whatsoever, and never has, but infuriatingly matches perfectly the description and details in MR12 (large clusters, 30-40 petals, rosette). I then tried another theory, because in his book, Quest-Ritson talks of a look-a-like, ‘Lady Gay’ (Walsh 1905) and mentions a white sport from it called ‘Mrs Littleton Dewhurst’ (Pearson 1912). The shape and form of the parent (see HMF photos) are a good match, but unfortunately the description in MR12 says the flowers of the white sport are “semi-double”. So our search goes on, or does it?
