Black Boy looks too purple, and it's single. And the double clematis is red instead of white... these sellers of plants!

Hee hee hee. And my Nashi doesn't get cherry slugs and doesn't flower at the same time as its pollinator, because it's a Manchurian pear. So I've grown Spectabilis up it.

The pears of Manchuria must be precious if rose-worthy. The tree appears sadly lacking in the proper pests. But the rose will even things up a bit with its thrips, hibiscus beetles and aphids :)

I don't think I get hibiscus beetles. From your photos, I think you visited Karen M's garden. She plants Manchurian pears to grow ramblers up, planting them at the same time. Wonderful effect.

I've been to Karen's garden, but my garden was already underway by then. Mine is miniscule by comparison, and there are only a few things with ramblers in them; a fir tree that has Adelaide d'Orleans growing up it, a privet that I'm training to a fan shape, with Kiftsgate, and a pittosporum with Nancy Hayward. Even the last two hoped-to-be monsters can barely make headway though, so far. I wonder how on earth Karen deals with possums!??? They are utterly relentless in their quest for rose dinners.
