In the
American Rose Annual 1951, Everett O. Nord, a landscape architect from Denver, Colorado, wrote an article entitled
Roses in the Mile High Country. In the article, Nord describes how to care for and grow roses in the unpredictable climate of the high country. He also lists roses that he had found did well there. Here they are!
Shrub Roses -- hardiest of all the roses Nord lists: 'Harison's Yellow, Rosa rugosa, 'F.J. Grootendorst', 'Austrian Copper', R. hugonis.
Hybrid Perpetuals - these are the next hardiest roses and particularly well adapted for gardens in the high country: 'Frau Karl Druschki', 'General Jacqueminot', 'Ulrich Brunner', 'Paul Neyron'.
Polyanthas and Floribundas: 'Ellen Poulsen', 'Improved Lafayette', 'Donald Prior', 'Betty Prior', 'World's Fair', 'Red Ripples', 'Floradora', 'Fashion' and 'Pinocchio'.
Hybrid Teas generally need a little more attention than the other types mentioned above, but Nord recommends these varieties and also suggests gardeners try one or two new varieties that are introduced each year: 'Mrs. Pierre S. du Pont', 'Mrs. E.P. Thom', 'Radiance', 'Crimson Glory', 'Talisman', 'The Doctor', 'Snowbird', 'President Hoover', 'K.A. Victoria', 'Joanna Hill', 'Etoile de Hollande', 'Charlotte Armstrong', 'Peace', 'Betty Uprichard', 'Pink Dawn' and 'Comtesse Vandal'.
Nord recommends the Brownell roses for their hardiness -- even the Brownell climbers need less winter protection than other climbing roses: 'Break O'Day', 'Dick Wilcox', 'Lily Pons', 'Pink Princess', 'Curly Pink', 'Red Duchess', 'Tip Toes' and 'Lafter', 'Apricot Glow', 'Climbing Break O'Day', 'Golden Glow', 'Orange Everglow', 'Pearly White' and 'Magic Carpet'.
Climbers that require some winter protection, but which Nord recommends: 'Paul's Scarlet Climber', 'Climbing American Beauty', 'Mme. Gregoire Staechelin', 'American Pillar', 'Dr. W. Van Fleet' and 'Mary Wallace'. Nord does not recommend any of the everblooming climbing hybrid teas in the high country.
