First year Love's Promise plant is growing great, but alas no fragrance for me as of yet.

A friend in CA sent me a bloom of Love's Promise with glossy leaves. It was intensely fragrant with a wonderful raspberry scent, which I prefer over her Oklahoma's lychee scent. She has alkaline clay and fertilizes her roses with chicken manure. High pH clay brings out the fruity scent best. Even my Veteran's Honor elusive cherry scent came out when I raise the pH with horse manure in my dense alkaline clay .. and the scent gets stronger in a vase with alkaline tap water at pH 9.

This is one of my favorite roses. Several flushes of blooms in a season and covered in blooms each flush. Lovely fragrance. Dark, velvety, red blooms. A wonderful garden rose that is very vigorous. Winter hardy in zone 5 Michigan. I will always have this rose.

Thank you for the rating on hardiness. I'm in zone 5a, Stephen Big Purple is another vigorous one which survives many winters as own-root, while my Romanticas (Frederic Mistral and Liv Tyler) died after a few winters as own-root roses.

Update: this rose is at its finest in cool weather. Even though it has good size and color in the warm months too, the fragrance is strongest in cool weather; it definitely it living up to its parentage now! Great rose!
