Greg's photo at Vintage Gardens shows a dark purple-red rose with a lighter edge. The only other photo on the internet is the one found here.

Ivan Mazepa a Cossack who lived in the 1600's got on the bad side of Peter the Great for siding with the Swedish. An idealist in his politics, he wanted the Russians to uphold their treaties-and protect Russian borders in the process. He and other Cossacks were subjects of many works of art in the 1800's, part of that romantic vision of freedom of the noble warrior, the opera Mazepa is one.

Both of these roses, "Mazepa" and "Kawkasskaja", were named for Cossacks or Slavic warriors.
