Ena Harkness, Climbing Hybrid tea climber... A family friend, Albert Norman, raised the bush form and wanted to name it for rose grower Bill Harkness, but Bill suggested it bear his wife's name instead. It appeared in 1946, and the climbing sport followed in 1954 from two different sources, R. Murrell in Hertfordshire and Gurteen & Ritson in Surrey. Only very limited availability in the US.

'Ena Harkness, Climbing'    Climber   Crimson    Summer  +  P5   H2  ***
The best way to grow this famous red rose is to plant it as a climber, by a wall or fence. The foliage looks darker, and the flowers larger than in the bush form; I don't know why that should be. Moreover the sting is drawn from the chief failing of the variety, that she hangs her head, for as a climber she hangs it just sufficiently to afford a perfect view. The sport occurred in two nurseries, Gurteen & Ritson  of Horley, Surrey, and R. Murrell of Bedmond Hill, Hertfordshire. It was introduced in 1954.
