3. Erinnerung an Brod: Hybrid between R. rubifolia and the Portland Rose, Genie de Chateaubriand. It already shows as a shrub the tendency to overhang; grafted high and in good moist soil, it makes up to 2 m long annual shoots, which although thick, but covered with flowers, hang down to the ground. In not too dry summer and soil the large, densely filled, flat flower is almost purplish-blue or violet-blue, usually with a dark red heart, and it is the only rose in this color that sometimes approaches a true blue, it surpasses Reine des Violettes, Violacea, Dr. Hogg and others of similar color. Viewed a few meters away, sometimes an especially dark colored flower appears almost black.

Erinnerung an Brod Hybrid Perpetual. Geschwind (Hungary) 1886. ('Souvenir de Brod'). Description. Brod is a town in Bosnia. Supposed to be a hybrid between Rosa setigera (R. rubifolia) and 'Génie de Châteaubriand'. [Thomas thinks] it doubtful whether there is really any R. setigera in its parentage; it is a fairly typical Hybrid Perpetual... any shade from cerise-pink to dark crimson-purple is found in each flower...

(from: Möller’s Deutsche Gärtner-Zeitung 1886, p. 66-67)
Rud. Geschwind sent us last autumn 13 different climbers under the name „Hungarian Climbers“ to bring into commerce and thus have them tested by roselovers…
Erinnerung an Brod: Hybrid between R. rubifolia and the Portland-rose Genie de Châteaubriand. Already as a shrub she shows a tendency to arch; grafted as a tree and in good moist soil, she produces annual canes of up to 2 m, which, although thick, arch to the ground when full of blooms. In not too dry summers and soils, is the large, densely full, flat bloom almost purple-blue or violet-blue, mostly with a dark red heart, and in this colour she is the only rose hitherto which nears a real blue, surpassing herein Reine des Violettes, Violacea, Dr. Hogg and others of similar colour. Watched from a distance of some meters, sometimes individual blooms which are coloured especially dark, appear almost black.
