What color is this, exactly?

Tan, gold, russet. It changes. There were a number of seedlings from this cross. Most were culled due to susceptibility to mildew. There are two remaining. So far they are mildew resistant. There is a vigorous russet miniature climber and a very upright full size seedling. They are both semi-double and heavily prickled. Hopefully I'll add some pics this Spring.

Hot Cocoa is definitely a valid route to go if you want to beef up color on those pesky bracteata types, lol. The colors are very unique. Congrats. If you know anyone with Coffee Bean, ask for pollen cause its even more vivid that Hot Cocoa. I plan on buying it (Coffee Bean) again for the balcony. Its probably one of the best true minis I have ever seen. I also bought Harm Saville for the balcony for breeding. Despite the "meh" form, the color is very saturated, the plant is healthy for a miniflora (most are disease prone, unfortunately), and the vigor is very nice. I was actually thinking of trying Miracle on the Hudson with it because the reds are so dense. I guess their parent, Santa Claus, is pretty good at passing on color retention.

In my opinion you could do worse than to do a line breeding based on 'Santa Claus'.

'Hot Cocoa' was a good rose and produced some interesting colors in seedlings but I'm trying to breed away from roses that are heavily prickled now.

Yeah, Hot Cocoa is a hand-ripper. Its also grows at massively uneven heights. It has Dolly Parton/Kim Kardashian syndrome, LOL! I cannot recall the prickle type or count on Coffee Bean, but I dont recall it being hurtful to prune. I suppose, though, that once you have the color, there isnt as much need to stay around the negative traits of some of the modern HT/FL types. Remember Me/Silver Jubilee/Tropicana is likely the thorn-giver, btw.

Melding 'Hot Cocoa' with a bracteata derivative probably wasn't the brightest idea I've ever had, even if 'Star Dust' is the smoothest of the lot. Of course it was primarily the health and color of HC I was after.

These things take time. I have a smooth descendant of 'Star Magic' out there right now.

With time, almost anything is possible.
