The "reflection" in the name referred to a "blue" tone to the reverse for sure and I THOUGHT it refered also to a quilled bloom. The J&P catalog for sure DID show a rather quilled blossom. I have 2, one budded, one own root. Neither blooms "quilled" but this week, and with the budded (2nd year here, band is 1st year) AND the band, they bloomed and yes, I saw the "aurora borealis"-----there is a strange, unique, lovely BLUE to the reverse. The closest thing to BLUE, TRUE BLUE, in any rose...............it is lovely. Still not a great variety for me, I cannot grow Tropicana and this one in general seems to behave very much like its parent............but yes, REAL BLUE seems to appear on the reverse when conditions will it so-----here in Columbus those conditons lately have been = to Mumbai: 95-ish/80-ish for many days following 2 weeks where it rained several times a day each and every day...................

Red roses are not my favorite, but a few years ago I noticed a dearth of them in my collection so I ordered Red Masterpiece from Hortico and a custom root Red Reflection from Vintage. Channeling the J&P catalog, maybe 1976, as I will do.....................the Hortico Red Masterpiece ended up being a mislabel, a medium cherry-red rose with a somewhat small at times bloom on a plant that has matte medium green leaves and lots of little thorns much like Tropicana. Have spent the past 2 summers trying to identify what it may be as it is no rose I have ever grown. No scent. Cherry red. Great substance. Seemed very 1970's to me as by the 80's the reds were going deeper, clearer and/or velvety again, and the 60's still had fragrant and bluing reds. So I assumed it to be Red Lion or Red Planet, left the "unidentified" label in the pot, flirted with just pitching it out since I really do not care for it nor do I like having mediocre roses which are unidentified (I just do not have the space).........................well, everyone knows where this is going. The custom root arrived this spring and just bloomed and it is, of course, the same rose as the Hortico mislabeled Red Masterpiece. So it appears I have had Red Reflection all along and have not liked it much. Waited 40 years to see RR (as well as Taj Mahal) and the end reactions could not be more anti-climactic! Did Hortico approach UC Davis for budwood on Masterpiece and got Reflection instead? This would be the only way?? Although the same rose, are either of them truly Red Reflection?

Oh no! Weeks surely would have no info on this one because it was from Warriner and the Jackson & Perkins machine. Bred in the 60's, it wasn't released and/or patented until the mid-70's. Recall fondly the gorgeous star-shaped bright red blossom pictured in the catalogs and the rhetoric regarding the "shining" reverse, but I never grew it. Just this spring received my custom root from Vintage---it is small but I am hopeful Red Reflection and I can finally meet!

This stunning HT is a winner! That rich red with a reflective lighter reverse. It is one of those 60's gems from Weeks that hasn't disappeared--YET! But don't ask Weeks for it.
