The authors give the parentage of Hamburg as Eva x Ami Quinard.

Thank you Karl. I've added a few references but couldn't find anything on 'Ami Quinard' (instead of 'Daily Mail Scented'). However, I have made a note on the main page.

Patricia,
I can't read the whole paper, but I found another reference in the Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society (1955): The History of Garden Roses, by Ann P. Wylie, Part II, 8-24

p. 23:
"The occurrence of pelargonidin in 'Sondermeldung' is perhaps due to an independent mutation, but this must have occurred at least as far back as 'Eva,' since KORDES (1951b) states that both 'Eva' and its seedling 'Hamburg' very occasionally produced orange-cinnabar coloured seedlings. 'Baby Château,' one parent of 'Sondermeldung' and two generations removed from 'Hamburg,' ... "

This does add another bit of confusion if 'Baby Château' is TWO generations from 'Hamburg'. Of course, Kordes may have raised a second generation from the cross, just as he did with Independence/Sondermeldung.

The case for Hamburg as Eva x Ami Quinard (instead of Daily Mail Scented) grows stronger in my mind
I have muddled around with a pencil and there is a "burnt black seedling" which Kordes mentioned in the 1953 reference for 'Ami Quinard'. This seedling came in between Hamburg and Baby Chateau, which would make Baby Chateau a second generation from Hamburg? But I still can't see things clearly. Perhaps others can.

Here are my muddlings:
1926 J. C. Thornton
K. of K. x Red Letter Day

1927 Robin Hood
Seedling x Miss Edith Cavell

1927 Ami Quinard
Mme. Meha Sabatier x [Mrs. Edward Powell x R. foetida bicolour]

1927 Daily Mail Scented
Chateau de Clos Vougeot x K. of K.

1933 Eva
Robin Hood x J. C. Thornton

1935 Hamburg
Eva x Daily Mail Scented…. as HelpMeFind states…or
Eva x Ami Quinard

19?? un-named burnt black seedling [see Ami Quinard 1953 ref for mention of this sdlg]
Robin Hood x Ami Quinard

1936 Baby Chateau
Aroma x un-named burnt black seedling ……or
Aroma x [Eva x Ami Quinard] ….as HelpMeFind states.
