'Mary Anne Bumby'. In an article for Heritage Roses New Zealand, 1991 ....Ken Nobbs wrote of four of his roses: 'Hayward Wright', 'Dr. Hayward and Martha Ford', 'Te Kawanata Hou' and 'Mary Anne Bumby' bred from 'Tauschendschon' and 'Veilchenblau'. "These four, if new shoots............
But in his registration form Ken in 1987 confusingly notes that the seed parent was 'Jane Williams' and the pollen parent was unknown. He describes 'Mary Anne Bumby' as a shrub growing to half a metre, not a climber like'Tausendschon' or 'Veilchenblau', both ramblers. Its buds are pink and the flowers white with golden stamens with a strong sweet fragrance. the shrubs shows massed heads and it flowers several times. Much loved by the bees, perhaps?

Ken Nobbs: I was also growing smooth stem rambler roses using 'Tausendschon' and 'Veilchenblau', the former as seed parent. Neither of these two roses is fully thornfree, nevertheless a high proportion of the seedlings have a smooth stem except for hooks under the petioles of the midribs of the pinnate leaves..... Most of these seedlings have massed display of red hips to rival a cotoneaster. 'Tausendschon' passed on its floriferousness to four seedlings, which I have named 'Mary Anna Bumby', and ...
These four, if new shoots are allowed to grow, produce pink buds and double pink fragrant blooms fading to white, and have one good flowering in the depth of winter, usually in August, as well as several periods of bloom during the year. Like 'Tausendschon' they need cleaning up, cutting back any dying shoots.
