'Plain Jane' was probably named for Mrs Fitzhardinge's elder daughter, Jean Mary, later Mrs Dean. Two reasons suggest this: who else would suffer receiving a rose with such a name? The name was probably a family joke. Second, her second daughter received a rose called 'Prudence' so her other daughter in fairness had to have one too.

Dear Eric,
Thank you for your time in sharing the information on Mrs. Fitzhardinge's roses. We have noted all, with the exception of the 'Plain Jane' comment as, although probably correct, HelpMeFind is not too fussed with using probablies. But your comment is there for those who search

Dear Patricia,
I quite understand and agree. Beatrice Berkeley is even harder to pin down in our present state of knowledge. I am sure she will turn up eventually, but will her rose?
