I have a spring blooming climbing or pillar rose. Other roses from this collection are Frau Karl Druski and New Dawn. The house was built in 1920 or so. The rose is a semi-double yellow, with a very "peppery" scent. It has GIANT thorns, which are red thoughout the season. I'm looking for some guidance on what it might be? I live in zone 5.

My Thanks in advance!

This site is extremely conservative when it comes to hardiness ratings. Queen Elizabeth is a popular cultivar in and around Metro-Detroit, USDA hardiness zone 5. It requires little protection here and is typically quite hardy.

I live in Metro-Detroit, I grow "Gemini" HT very well. I think the hardiness listed is dubious. My rose is even grafted and it continues to perform well.

This is what HMF is looking for: actual experience. Again, the question is whether you winter protect. Is Detroit Zone 5 or Zone 6?

Hi
Yes, with a rose cone with the top cut off of it. It is near my Lagerfeld. Same scenario, though. It is 5-6' from a north facing wall. Often canes sticking out from the rose cone are still alive.

As to the zone question: TECHNICALLY my area is zone 5. I'm close to the Detroit river, and the closer you are to the city, the more zone 6 you are... but I can't grow zone 6 crape myrtle even in a rose cone, so I'm guessing zone 5b. Most hybrid teas survive with a little help around here, that is, if they are grafted ones.
