This rose has an upright habit, much like a dwarfed version of 'Therese Bugnet'. The canes are very winter hardy even in zone 4 and have a nice purple coloration over winter it also inherited from its dad. It blooms abundantly throughout the growing season. Depending on the weather the blooms can appear a lighter mauve or purple. Often there are white streaks down some of the petals. It won a silver certificate in the American Rose Society American Rose Center Trials in Shreveport, Louisana. It has proven itself in the North and through this test also in the South.

You should get Heirlooms to grow it! We could use smaller North American hybrid types in the West.

I just noticed that this is newly available from High Country Roses this year. I think that is the first time I've seen it for sale anywhere!

Given that this rose was supposed to have been introduced in 2000, I'm guessing that the Circus listed in the parentage of this rose is not the 1999 Kordes Circus ('KORlumara'), but more likely the 1954 'Circus' by Herb Swim.

Isn't this GABRIELLE not Gabriel? Which is truly correct? All reference material I have in my collection and several nurseries selling this rose I've encountered refer to the name as the female Gabrielle Noyelle. Not the masculine "Gabriel" like the angel as listed by HMF. However; it seems that just as many references and sources refer to this rose as "Gabriel".

It is correctly named 'Gabriel Noyelle', named after a friend of the breeder. All of the references contemporary with its introduction spelled it that way, and later references that noted its derivation did the same. Its name was only improperly feminized later.

Yes, it is Gabriel. We list the feminine "Gabrielle" in hidden form, so that the search function can still lead to 'Gabriel Noyelle'.

They seem to be sold out now, but David Austin has grafted plants available.
