PAKEHA
[often incorrectly spelt as Pakaha, Pakahae, Paheka]
George Dawson, Victoria. Bred 1972, intro?1980. White Hybrid Tea.
Parentage: Pink Parfait x Memoriam.

1973 Australian Rose Annual
p153-4 [black and white pix] This bunch of roses was judged the best bunch of Australian raised roses at the N.R.S.V. Autumn Show 1972. The decorative white blooms are produced on a strong growing bush which is disease resistant. The bunch was exhibited by Mr. E. M. Phillips, Rosanna, Victoria, and as yet this new cultivar is un-named. It was raised by amateur hybridist Mr. G. Dawson of Ferntree Gully, Victoria. (Pink Parfait x Memoriam). This cultivar is not yet available in Australia.

1988 Australian Rose Annual
p38. George Dawson of Bunyip, Victoria, a retired market gardener and vegetable grower turned his hand to rose breeding with considerable success and has produced many excellent varieties which have been introduced and many more which have not, although worthy. At his peak he planted up to 20,000 seed in one season and he concentrated on large flowered roses. He is keen to have perfume and likes mixed colours. ......Pakeha, a free flowering white of decorative value.

1996 Australian Rose Annual
p58. Mrs. Barbara Gunther. Pakeha. It’s difficult for me not to rave about ‘Pakeha’. I just love its creamy white blooms, deepening to soft, honey-coloured centres, generous with its flowering, and trouble-free too. At night, it’s as though the bush is covered with many small moons – the flowers have that strange, glowing quality that white-flowered plants display in the dark. On a more earthly note, ‘Pakeha’ likes to sprawl a bit, so definitely needs more than the usual space, allowed at planting time. With that qualification, highly recommended.

1999. Dianne Ackland “The Australian Rose Directory” 3rd Edition
p70. Pakeha. Dawson, Australia, 1980. H.T. White. [Available from] Golden Vale, Gretchen, Melville, Minirose.

1999. Heritage Roses in Australia Inc. journal. Vol 21, No. 1.
P68. Throughout the [Victorian State Rose] garden, there are a number of Australian-bred roses; whole beds of Dawson’s Pakeha, and ..... planted in the Tudor Rose section.

1999 Botanica’s Roses. 2nd and revised edition
p448. [incorrectly spelt] Paheka. Modern, large-flowered hybrid tea. White blend. Repeat-flowering. One of George Dawson’s best roses. ‘Paheka’ produces flowers that are white with a slight tinge of the palest pink. They open slowly from very well-formed buds to large, full blooms that show stamens in the center. There are about two dozen broad petals of excellent substance. The growth is very tall and spreading, and is repeatedly covered with a profusion of flowers. ‘Paheka’ has no significant disease problems, and is an excellent rose for bedding or as a hedge. The fragrant blooms make wonderful cut flowers and keep their shape well. Zones 5-9. Dawson, Australia, 1980. Parentage unknown.

2004. James Young with David Ruston “The Joy of Roses”
p50. Colourpix. [incorrectly spelt] Paheka. Hybrid Tea – Bred by Dawson in Australia and introduced in 1980, this rose has elegant buds that open to white flowers with a hint of pale pink. They are of exhibition form and have a good fragrance. ‘Paheka’ is particularly free-flowering and one of the best Australian-bred roses. In warm climates it flowers well into the winter. The bush is tall and spreading with healthy foliage (Parentage unknown). Zones 6-9.
