Hi Paul, it's now eight years since this first flowered. What have you determined? Might it be worth taking forward?

A Beth in California has the rose, so it isn't extinct after all!

Ok you guys, I am not positive this is the same rose, but I am assuming it is. I purchased it recently from Rogue Valley Roses. They had listed a rose called "LITTLE GREY PEARL" on their website for sale some time last month. I happened upon it as I was going thru the alphabetical listings, looking for a couple roses to add to my order to make it worth the shipping. There was no info about it, just the name and price pretty much, and a cool photo that made me order it instantly. I figured it was going to be a mini rose, based on the name. The photo had the most amazing color. Like a cool grey with a dusty blue-lavender blush and a sort of tannish-grey center. I immediately finished up my order to make sure I snagged it before it was sold out! I went back to check off and on even after I received the rose to see if any info was added to the listing, but nothing was. It was still showing on the website for awhile after I got it, but now, I see they have removed it.

I posted this pic on the Gardenweb Forum, and it was suggested that it could be another rose listed as LGP1. But in looking at the photos of LGP1, this rose (LGP2) looks more accurate. So far, in the short time I've had the rose, it has popped out 3 blooms and currently has two more buds. It's about 12-14" tall and the blooms are around 1" or so. They open up slowly and last for quite a long time. And my temps have been in the high 90s this past week while it's been blooming. I'm really excited about it. I love oddball-colored roses, and this one is very unique. I just wish I knew why they removed it from the RVR website. Or why they allowed it to be added in the first place? I'm just glad I was able to snag it before they pulled it off the website!

Either way, it exists. They seem almost identical.

It appears to be something sent them for test that more than likely was never supposed to have been released. Only Paul can verify that for sure. Thanks for thinking of me, Jakub, but I am no longer in "collector mode". I am only growing things I believe useful for creating healthier, more productive seedlings or which have specific sentimental value to me. I have Grey Pearl itself. I sincerely don't need anything else requiring "coddling".

I am curious what it would do, though. It is a hybrid bracteata, if the lineage is accurate, and the source of mauve is quite distinct of other mauve roses- this is the rose that made me wonder what weird things Floradora could do. There is pernetiana behind Guinee, but I thought the bracteata would dilute that. Sequoia Ruby also throws these colors without Guinee- Paul had a Scarlet Moss x SR seedling that was purple-grey. Something else to ask, one day.

Another great reason to avoid this rose for my area...Bracteata hybrids are severely addicted to rust and rust is my climate's official fungus.

Has the rusting been from Muriel, or from bracteata in general? Or are there simply too few non-Moore bracteata hybrids to tell?

I don't know. The only ones which never rusted were Star Magic (TOTALLY bullet proof, not even aphids and the rabbits wouldn't touch it); Out of Yesteryear; Pink Powderpuff and Out of the Night. All the others rusted like old nails. And, that was in two climates where rust wasn't generally an issue. Here it is a HUGE issue.
