[From "What is the next step?", by John Hook]
Etoile de Portugal.... Hybrid Gigantea bred by Cayeux in Lisbon 1898
We had obtained Vicomtesse Pierre de Fou from Beales, but this was obviously incorrect. We had suspicions this was a Hybrid Gigantea. A few years later we obtained Vicomtesse Pierre de Fou from Cavriglia which was more accurately named so we needed to find another name for the Beales version. After several years of research and study, we identified this rose as Etoile de Portugal, the first Hybrid Gigantea recorded in Europe.

"Beales Vicomtesse Pierre de Fou". Tea Noisette. Fair rebloom. Outstanding fragrance. Habit: No. 2 [see drawing]. Breeder and date unknown. Provenance [Beales].
This is not the true variety of VICOMTESS PIERRE DE FOU as illustrated by Graham Stuart Thomas and grown at l'Hay. Very pendulous flowers, large and full with large petals, rather similar to BELLE PORTUGAISE, very fragrant, a rich crimson-pink to carmine with salmon shadings.

'Vicomtesse Pierre de Fou'. HT Cl. (Tea Noisette). Good reliable rebloom, outstanding fragrance, Habit No. 1 [see drawing]. Sauvageot, 1923. Provenance: Pickering.
Finally the true variety has come to us from those wonderful people at Pickering Nurseries in Canada! We are indebted to them for the years of work they have done bringing the finest roses, both old and new to North America. Blossoms are tight rosettes that tend to yellow ochre on the outer petals, the inner petals are often carmine and yellow blended. Very fragrant of Tea.
