Does this rose like to be a certain size before blooming? I bought this last year from HCR and while it has grown some, it hasn't bloomed yet. I expect it to put some size on this year, but was just wondering if anyone else experienced this.

Blossomed fairly young for me.

This one needs space to do it's thing. It wants to get big and not be fussed with.

You shouldn't cut it hard if you want blossoms. Once it gets going only prune to shape.

I haven't cut it at all. It came in as a band last year. Just waiting on blooms..just wondered if it waited until it got bigger before giving any. I didnt get any blooms this Spring. Usually one year old plants give me something, so still wondering what's up with mine.

I'm guessing it's still settling in. Own roots sometimes take awhile, especially those with a close species component.

How is it doing for you now? I also got it as a band from HCR this year, it took off in late summer and it started blooming even before it took off. So I was surprised to see how different it behaved for you. It was actually unexpected for me how quickly it settled in, we have hot dry summers and most plants (including roses) spend most of the first year adjusting in my experience so far.
Maybe I just got lucky with this one, now here's hoping it will tackle the first winter in equally spirited manner.

Goodness, that’s a gorgeous color, Alana! Is it really such a dark purple? I sure wish I could grow a few gallicas. I’m always attracted to what I can’t grow here. Isn’t that always the way? Yours is very beautiful! Lisa

you're welcome. Sadly, this looks to be one of so many that will not be available anywhere in the US after Vintage Gardens closes up shop.

It may not even be available now in the US. I bought one from Vintage, but the provenance is sadly lacking. The id seems to be no more than a guess. From what I've seen so far it does not seem to fit the historical descriptions. For one thing it would be quite a stretch to call any of its flowers lemon yellow. The blooms look white with perhaps a touch of creme, but there ain't no yellow! Not even when the flowers first open, whether in full sun or shade.

The roses named Alberic Barbier, La perle and Francois Foucard I bought or I have seen somewhere else seem to be the same roses - in my Rosenpark Reinhausen they ARE the same.

I have the version of François Foucard that Vintage sold. It has red stamens. They are yellow on my version of La Perle.

It's very vigorous. I had to move it several years ago because it was taking over the front of my house. It's still recovering in my back yard, but I'm thinking this year will finally be another good year for it.

This rose has been extremely vigorous and hardy for me. No dieback at all.
