No. 15.—John Gardner—Bright red disc fading to rosy red with a center of bright red petaloids, each bordered with an edge of brightest gold. A fine landscape variety as it is a heavy bloomer and does not grow too tall. (2025) Includes photo(s). Heather Description Full double on mature plants, the large flower opens in shades of apricot. The pigments are darker at opening and in the depths of the flower, the color paling when exposed to sunlight. Guard petals are rounded and cupped surrounding inner petals which encircle a narrow collar of stamens, which in turn surrounds the outer petals of the inner flower, leading to wanted fullness in the mature flower. This variety boasts an excellent plant habit, it is vigorous and of good increase. The plant quickly matures into a large clump, making an admirable display when in flower. It is a dependable bloomer with ample color on a substantial bush. One flower per stem presented near the foliage gives the bush a neat and trim appearance. The stem is generally erect, but may spread with an open flower, especially if subjected to rain. Light support is suggested if to be flowered in the landscape. The bush is well-clad in attractive deep green foliage, the leaflets hold up better than the average of herbaceous hybrids in later summer, showing moderate resistance to leaf spot fungi and has been found quite resistant to mildew here in NW Missouri. The plant yields fine, fragrant stems for the vase and adds a unique color to the cut flower garden and the perennial border. (2025) Includes photo(s). Gena Marie Description The fragrant, full double flower opens in shades of pink. The pigmentation is more saturated in the heart of the flower grading lighter outward in shades of light pink to blush. Both brilliance and saturation are more pronounced in cool spring climate. Broad outer petals surround many layers of large, elongated segments to the center, forming a buildup, high silhouette bloom. The large flower is generously furnished with petals, well-proportioned and of good substance. The plant is a strong grower in our NW Midwest climate and has a very satisfying plant habit. It is vigorous and dependable with ample color on a medium height bush. One flower per stem is presented a few inches above the foliage imparting a neat and well-proportioned appearance. Sturdy stems are erect and self-supporting. The bush is largely unaffected by stormy weather while in flower and does not require support under normal growing conditions. The bush is well-clad in medium green foliage. Leaflets remain green well into summer, apparently being somewhat resistant to leaf spot fungi and appear to be quite resistant to peony mildew here in NW Missouri. It has a notably attractive combination of qualities which makes it an excellent choice for the perennial border. The flowering period is extended by side-buds. Plant habit is outstanding, combining strong stems and season long retention of foliage quality. The leaflets remain green and healthy into late summer. This is a peony which can take on the more demanding role of mass planting in a designed landscape. For, it needs no screening after flowering, holding its own with the more structural ornamental choices, making a season-long positive contribution. Intensity of the pigmentation varies over an unusually wide range, changing in the sun and the prevailing spring temperatures. Two rows of broad, nicely rounded guard petals surround a contrasting boss of light-yellow stamens. The pleasantly fragrant flower retains its cupped shape well through petal fall. Altogether a nicely formed flower with a desirable combination of qualities. The bush has a very satisfying plant habit, it is vigorous and increases well. It is a dependable bloomer and produces ample color on a medium height bush within a few years of planting. One large flower per stem is presented near the deep green foliage. Strong stems are erect and self-supporting, the bush retains its shape without support against inclement weather events. The bright colors draw attention from afar, an excellent choice for the perennial border and mass plantings. Rows of broad, lightly cupped guard petals surround bands of smaller inner petals. Excellent habit, free flowering and grows into a stately medium height bush. Stems are stout and stand well against harsh weather while in flower. Broad leaflets cover the bush to near the ground with the foliage holding up very well into the hot summer season, for a hybrid. It is an excellent peony well suited for the sunny border. (2025) Includes photo(s). Carr East No. 2 Description Anemone form, medium large flower opens blush pink, fading to near white with age. Displays as a bomb double on well-established, mature plants. Outer petals are rounded and of a darker blush color. Petals of the center ball are long and narrower and pale blush, at the base is a hint of buttercream that glimmers with a hint of gold in the sunlight. New shoots emerging from the soil are at first a deep bronze. Good plant habit, vigorous and fast to increase. Produces a generous, medium height bush with several stems that spread wide when in bloom. Mechanical support is needed for best results.
